Testing & Diagnostics

Lung Cancer Testing & Diagnostics

A low-dose CT (CAT scan) is one way to detect lung cancer in its earliest stages while it is still treatable, and Tampa General is committed to prevention and early detection. As a result, we offer the TGH Lung Cancer Screening Program, which is the result of multidisciplinary collaboration and individualized, evidence-based care. Like other preventative screenings similar to a mammogram or colonoscopy, lung cancer screening can be a part of your preventive health check.

Tampa General is setting the standard in the region, making low dose CT imaging more widely available and free to eligible patients. Using this powerful new tool, specialists at Tampa General are helping save more lives from lung cancer.

In addition to CTs, TGH utilizes several state-of-the-art techniques and technologies to treat you as effectively as possible, including:

  • Bronchoscopy
  • Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Lung needle biopsy
  • Mediastinoscopy
  • Medical Thoracoscopy
  • Navigational Bronchoscopy
  • Sputum cytology

TGH’s Lung Cancer Center is a high-volume and nationally recognized program that specializes in the treatment of pulmonary and thoracic diseases. Specialists at Tampa General work collaboratively with each other to diagnose and treat some of the most complex and advanced lung cancer cases, with the goal of providing strong outcomes. Our patients have access to the full spectrum of cancer care, from the most advanced surgical techniques to breakthrough radiation treatments and cutting-edge medical management of your health.

Did you know that we are one of the highest-volume hospitals for high-acuity lung cancer surgeries in Florida?

Treatment options for patients include:

Surgical Oncology

Our surgical oncology team performs minimally invasive bronchoscopies, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), cervical mediastinoscopy, and navigational bronchoscopies for the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of lung cancer.

Patients can also receive advanced, minimally invasive treatment thanks to our extensive experience with the da Vinci® Surgical System, one of the few centers in the region to offer this state-of-the-art robot-assisted procedure.

The TGH Cancer Institute offers minimally invasive and open surgical techniques to treat complicated lung cancer cases, metastasectomies for sarcomas and other tumors, pancoast tumors, chest wall tumors, mediastinal tumors, including thymoma, germ cell tumors, esophageal cancer, and malignant pleural effusions.

Medical Oncology

Patients at Tampa General Hospital’s Cancer Institute have access to advanced medical oncology treatments including targeted therapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy and chemoradiation for cancerous lesions that cannot be removed with surgery.

In addition, patients can receive cutting-edge treatment to help identify, treat and manage their lung cancer, such as antibody treatment (we are one of the only two centers in the Tampa Bay area offering antibody treatment for relapsed small cell lung cancer treatment and serve as a referral center for the community oncologists for this treatment).

Radiation Oncology

Tampa General’s radiation oncology program delivers the best and newest radiation treatments, enhanced locations, and internationally recognized physicians.

Radiation treatment options include:

In 2024, we used a relatively new and minimally invasive robotic technique to improve and even save the lives of 100 patients with various stages of lung cancer.
