Treatments for Cardiovascular Conditions Include Medications and Surgery
Treatment for most cardiovascular conditions includes a combination of two or more therapies. For instance, patients with coronary heart disease may receive medications to help alleviate symptoms and prevent complications, surgery to widen or bypass clogged coronary arteries and specific diet and lifestyle instructions to help undo as much reversible damage as possible.

Cardiovascular Treatment Options
Our multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, vascular specialists, electrophysiologists, interventional cardiologists and other heart and vascular specialists formulate unique treatment plans for patients based on their specific diagnoses, symptoms experienced and how the patient has responded to previous treatments. Treatment can also vary based on a patient’s age, lifestyle and any other medications he or she is taking for unrelated conditions.
Common types of treatment for cardiovascular conditions include:
- Medications to help lower cholesterol or blood pressure, prevent blood clots, decrease the chance of experiencing a heart attack or prevent atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias
- An angioplasty (surgery to repair or unblock an artery), with or without the placement of a stent to keep the artery open afterward
- Dietary adjustments (e.g., reducing the consumption of fat and cholesterol and increasing the consumption of vegetables and fiber) and increased physical activity
- Interventional radiology and electrophysiology (EP) solutions, such as EP studies, radiofrequency ablation procedures for the treatment of arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation, MAZE procedures, cardiac resynchronization therapy and conduction system pacing, as well as implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) device and lead management
- Rehabilitative care, including physical therapy and occupational therapy, in the case of a heart attack or stroke
- Heart transplantation, if all other treatments fail and the patient is facing a significantly shortened life expectancy (provided all other transplant candidate requirements are met)
