Lung Transplant Procedures Performed at Tampa General Hospital

A lung transplant procedure is reserved for a person who suffers from lung failure, which occurs when the lungs can no longer move oxygen and carbon dioxide efficiently in and out of the cells in the body. Tampa General Hospital’s Lung Transplant Program specializes in performing transplants for adult patients who have been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and pulmonary fibrosis, two leading causes of lung failure.

In 2017, TGH’s Lung Transplant Program performed its 500th adult lung transplant - a milestone that only 25 other transplant centers in the country have achieved. The first lung transplant was performed in 2002.

Both single and double lung transplants are performed at TGH. The program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to transplant care by incorporating physicians with expertise in pulmonology, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and infectious disease who are also involved in multiple TGH transplant programs. Because of this method, TGH’s Lung Transplant Program has survival rates that meet or exceed national survival rate statistics, according to the latest data released from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients in July 2015. TGH, which received national recognition from U.S. News & World Report as one of America's Best Hospitals for Pulmonology, operates one of only four active lung transplant programs in Florida. Some notable facts about our program include:

  • Our one-year patient survival rate of 89.91 percent and our three-year patient survival rate of 73.81 percent both exceed national survival rate statistics, according to the latest available SRTR data. Our program’s longest-surviving lung recipient has survived more than 12 years.
  • Since 2006, our program has performed an average of 42 transplants per year. This ranks TGH as one of the leaders in lung transplantation in Florida and as one of the top 10 lung transplant centers in the nation.
  • Cardiothoracic transplant referral buttonThanks to our partnership with LifeLink Foundation, Inc., a nationally recognized organ procurement organization, our time to transplant is among the shortest in the nation and the shortest in Florida. On average, 50 percent of patients in our lung transplant program are transplanted within 5.4 months of listing, based on the latest SRTR data.
  • TGH’s Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program is the largest adult program in the state and is certified and supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Potential lung transplantation candidates are evaluated on an individual basis, based on the information contained in a physician-submitted transplant referral form, as well as other factors.
