Muma Childrens Hospital at TGH Completes Phase 2 of Pediatric Renovations

muma children's hospital at tgh leadership cut a ribbon to celebrate completion of phase 2 renovations to the pediatric unit

July 8 ribbon-cutting celebrates the next phase of TGH’s commitment to provide world-class facilities that support outstanding pediatric care.

Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) recently completed the second construction phase of its renovated pediatric facilities. This phase, part of the overall master plan to build a state-of-the-art children’s hospital within a hospital, includes several new facilities. The additions feature an activity center and the Fishman Family Foundation Teen Lounge.

“Our team at Muma Children’s Hospital has always provided a high level of quality care and now our state-of-the-art pediatric unit will match that care for families across our region and beyond,” said Nikki Hurley, MSN, RN, NE-BC, interim vice president, Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH and TGH Women’s Institute. “We are committed to addressing not only the physical and mental aspects of health care, but also the unique developmental needs for these patients. We are very excited to complete Phase 2 of our renovations, adding spaces and resources outside of our clinical operations that truly contribute to the wellness, of our pediatric and adolescent patients.”

The activity center offers a bright and engaging environment where children can take necessary breaks from treatment. Tampa General designed the center to encourage positivity, joy, recovery and learning in a space dedicated to letting kids do what they do best: play.

The Fishman Family Foundation Teen Lounge is a dedicated space that allows adolescent patients to relax, socialize with age-appropriate games and entertainment and regain a sense of autonomy during their hospital stay. The lounge provides patients with a break from the clinical environment and promotes critical growth and development, including social interaction, coping skills and emotional support.

“As an academic health system, TGH and USF Health are committed to continuous innovation to help our patients achieve the best possible health outcomes,” said Dr. Patricia Emmanuel, medical chief of the Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH, Lewis A. Barness Professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “These facility improvements are crucial to providing a therapeutic space that promotes healing for our youngest patients and their families during their time at Tampa General.”

The innovative, state-of-the-art renovations are part of a comprehensive transformation of the inpatient pediatric areas at Muma Children’s Hospital. TGH completed Phase 1 of the expansion in October 2024, which included overhauling the technology infrastructure, updating patient rooms and waiting area, creating a family dining area, renovating nurses stations and lounges and remodeling physical and occupational therapy gyms.

At the ribbon-cutting, the TGH Foundation thanked Phase 2 donors including Pam and Les Muma, Jeff and Brandy Fishman, Tristan Wirfs and Jennifer and Randy Stolberg. The foundation also announced an incredible $2 million gift from Greg and Meredith Balasco to name the day hospital, which is scheduled for renovation in the third phase of construction.

“The transformational gifts from Pam and Les Muma coupled with additional generous investments like the one from Greg and Meredith Balasco enable Tampa General to match our world-class care with world-class facilities,” said Frann Leppla, executive vice president and chief philanthropy officer at Tampa General. “The generosity of our donors is unparalleled and these renovations mark key milestones of our Elevating Excellence campaign. We are both grateful and excited for what’s to come as we continue our work to innovate tomorrow’s TGH.”

The final phase of construction is expected to be complete in Spring 2026 and will include renovations to the pediatric dialysis unit and day hospital spaces, among other improvements.
