Region's First Integrated Limb Salvage Program
Tampa General Hospital’s Limb Preservation Program offers the region’s first fully integrated, multidisciplinary approach to advanced limb salvage. Bringing together experts from Vascular Surgery, Podiatry, Wound Care, Plastic Surgery, and Infectious Disease, the program is supported by a dedicated RN Navigator to ensure seamless coordination, rapid access to care, and a highly personalized patient experience.
From diagnosis through recovery, this unified model streamlines communication and accelerates treatment — helping patients move efficiently through every stage of care. By combining revascularization, advanced wound management, and reconstructive expertise, the program supports faster healing, reduces complications, and improves long-term outcomes.
Innovative Care Backed by Advanced Technology
Tampa General is committed to advancing limb preservation through cutting-edge technology and clinical research. The program provides access to innovative, minimally invasive techniques, including:
- Venous arterialization
- Percutaneous deep vein arterialization (pDVA) and leg bypass procedures
- Shockwave balloon angioplasty
- Absorbable stent technology
Patients benefit from expertise in complex revascularization, advanced wound reconstruction, and infection management, alongside access to emerging therapies through active clinical trials, including:
- MAGICAL BTK
This clinical trial evaluates the safety and effectiveness of a sirolimus drug-coated balloon (DCB) compared to standard percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for treating below-the-knee arterial disease. The goal is to determine whether this innovative approach can improve long-term vessel outcomes for patients. - IMPACT PAD
This study focuses on improving walking endurance, functional recovery and overall quality of life for patients with lower-extremity PAD. Researchers are evaluating interventions designed to help patients regain mobility and maintain independence. - NIH LEADER PAD
This trial examines whether a daily low dose of colchicine (0.5 mg) can reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events — including heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death — as well as severe limb complications that may require intervention or amputation in patients with PAD. - STRIDE II
The STRIDE II study is designed to assess the safety and performance of the Indigo™ Aspiration System in patients experiencing acute limb ischemia. The goal is to expand evidence supporting minimally invasive treatment options for restoring blood flow in the lower extremities.
Why Refer to the TGH Limb Preservation Program
- Rapid access for urgent and complex cases
- Direct provider-to-provider communication to support timely decision-making
- Coordinated, multidisciplinary care with seamless transitions across specialties
- Dedicated RN navigation to guide patients throughout treatment
- Access to clinical trials and emerging technologies
Expanded Wound Care Services
As part of the program’s growth, Tampa General has relaunched its comprehensive Wound Care Clinic, serving patients across both the ambulatory setting and the academic medical center. The clinic focuses on:
- Promoting timely wound healing
- Preventing infection
- Reducing downstream complications
Care includes advanced diagnostics, vascular assessment, offloading strategies, surgical intervention, and targeted antimicrobial therapy.
The clinic is led by Darren Courtright, DPM, CWSP, who brings specialized expertise in podiatric surgery and wound care. Dr. Courtright earned his degree from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine and completed his residency at the West Haven VA Medical Center, Yale School of Medicine Clinical Campus. His addition strengthens the program’s ability to manage complex wounds and offers referring providers a streamlined destination for high-level, coordinated care.
