The academic health system is recognized for excellence in analytics and artificial intelligence with Stage 7 certification in the Analytics Maturity Assessment Model.
Tampa, FL (June 17, 2025) – The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Enterprise Analytics Team has been awarded Stage 7 certification by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the world’s leading non-profit advocacy and accrediting organization in the health care IT industry. Tampa General is the first health system in Florida to achieve this designation, which recognizes analytics teams that achieve a high level of maturity using the Analytics Maturity Assessment Model (AMAM), an eight-stage (0-7) roadmap for advancing innovative decision-making using advanced analytics and artificial intelligence.
“Achieving HIMSS AMAM Stage 7 recognition is a tremendous honor, reaffirming Tampa General's place among the nation's elite health systems,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General. “This achievement underscores our dedication to using data and technology to provide seamless, high-quality care, and I applaud Scott Arnold and our outstanding IT team for their unwavering focus on leveraging technology to improve patient outcomes.”
The HIMSS AMAM focuses on achieving equitable outcomes through responsible AI use, building robust data infrastructure and fostering a culture of transparent governance within the assessed health system. The framework assesses key areas including impact and outcomes, analytics lifecycle maturity, data infrastructure effectiveness and governance practices.
By following the AMAM pathway, health care leaders can track progress, improve care quality and safety, support providers with accessible data and reduce the cognitive burden on clinicians. HIMSS offers support through assessments, consultations and validations, helping organizations identify improvement opportunities, develop tailored analytics strategies, and ultimately achieve Stage 7 recognition – the gold standard for health information technology. This journey empowers organizations to leverage the full potential of advanced analytics and AI to transform care delivery and achieve optimal patient outcomes.
“Achieving HIMSS AMAM Stage 7 is a testament to the strong partnership we've built between our providers, clinical teams and technology experts at Tampa General,” said Scott Arnold, executive vice president and chief digital & innovation officer at Tampa General. “By embracing the AMAM framework, we've not only reached the gold standard of health IT but reflected our commitment to leveraging the power of data and analytics to drive meaningful advancements in patient care and health care delivery.”
Tampa General has been recognized five times for its achievements and success in technology practices with a Stage 7 HIMSS designation. In 2021, the academic health system achieved Stage 7 designation in hospital and outpatient categories, for implementing technology practices related to electronic medical records (EMR) and comprehensive success in outpatient and ambulatory EMR adoption, capabilities and usage.
HIMSS, alongside its non-profit advocacy, evaluates and recognizes leading health care organizations globally for their health IT capabilities. Using a maturity model scaled from 0 to 7, HIMSS assesses the level of technology adoption within each organization. A score of zero indicates a completely paper-based system, while a seven signifies comprehensive electronic implementation across all health records and related tools, representing the highest level of digital maturity.
