Liver and Hepatology Programs

Tampa General Hospital's Liver Cancer and Hepatobiliary Oncology Program in the Cancer Institute specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all hepatobiliary cancers, including:

We excel in treating cancers that have metastasized (spread) to the hepatobiliary organs from other areas of the body and have an in-depth understanding of how these cancers may be connected to diseases such as diabetes and hepatitis.

WHAT SETS US APART

Our Liver and Hepatobiliary Oncology Program provides the latest breakthroughs in surgical treatment and is the only liver cancer program on the west coast of Florida to offer transplantation as a curative therapy. Our experts specialize in addressing even the most complex cases of cancer, providing comprehensive evaluation of tumors and offering rapid diagnostics and personalized care.

COMPREHENSIVE ONCOLOGY SERVICES

Our multidisciplinary team offers patients a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including:

  • Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)
  • Radiation therapy
  • Cryoablation
  • Yttrium-90 internal radiation
  • Oral chemotherapy with Sorafenib (Nexavar)
  • Liver and pancreatic resections
  • Transplantation
  • Electroporation
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Stereotactic radiotherapy
  • Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)

Our team also specializes in removing benign (noncancerous) masses. Benign liver lesions treated at TGH include hemangiomas, focal nodular hyperplasias (FNH) and adenomas. We offer genetic counseling as well, allowing us to pinpoint genetic traits within cancer and recommend specialized medicine as a highly targeted treatment.

LEADING-EDGE SURGICAL TREATMENT

TGH is improving the way liver, gallbladder, bile duct, pancreatic and gastric cancers are treated through innovations in surgical care. We are among a select few cancer centers in the region to offer HIPEC, a type of chemotherapy that is performed alongside tumor removal surgery to deliver cancer-fighting medications directly into the abdominal cavity.

For patients with inoperable cancer, our program offers compassionate service with advanced clinical trials and palliative care treatment options to minimize symptoms and enhance quality of life.

CLINICAL TRIALS

TGH participates in clinical trials for:

  • Unresectable cancer
  • Organ transplantation
  • The epidemiology of organ transplant
  • Liver recovery after liver resections
  • Therapy before resection for pancreatic cancer
  • Irreversible electroporation (IRE) for pancreatic cancer

These trials provide an opportunity for patients to become enrolled in trailblazing studies that might not be available elsewhere. Our renowned surgical expertise has contributed to our status as one of America's Best Hospitals in 2021-22 for Gastroenterology & GI Surgery and as one of the top 10% in the nation for Cancer Care.

PATIENT-FOCUSED CARE

A distinguishing factor of TGH’s Liver Cancer and Hepatobiliary Oncology Program is our community-based approach to treatment. Our specialists collaborate closely with primary care providers and referring physicians from practices throughout the region to ensure a seamless and convenient care experience. Our patients are our foremost priority, and we go the extra mile to eliminate hassles and roadblocks that may interfere with their care, such as lengthy appointment wait times, referral delays and unproductive in-person visits. When appropriate, our patients may take advantage of telehealth services.
