Outpatient Rehabilitation

TGH’s outpatient physical rehabilitation program offers the best therapy to help patients achieve the most complete recovery and reintegrate into their home and community following an injury, surgery or while living with a disabling health condition. Our program assists adult and pediatric patients, whether they are building on the skills gained from inpatient rehabilitation or just beginning a therapy program. Treatment may also include teaching adaptation and long-term management of any limited function to aid both patients and families during the recovery process.
The Tampa General Rehabilitation outpatient programs are accredited by the Joint Commission and designated as a State of Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center for both adult and pediatric patients.

SERVICES

PHYSICAL THERAPY
Physical therapy at TGH consists of specific exercises and modalities to help maximize functional abilities and mobility and increase independence in the home and community.During your first visit, a physical therapist (PT) will evaluate your strength, range of motion (ROM), balance and mobility and ask about your current home environment and goals for therapy. This information will allow your PT to develop an individualized treatment plan that fits your needs. Your therapist will work with you on exercises to improve your functional independence, evaluate the need for assistive device(s) and train you in the use of any needed devices.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Occupational therapy (OT) addresses activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, eating and homemaking skills. During your first visit, your occupational therapist will evaluate your strength, ROM, ability to complete ADL’s, cognitive status and ask you about your current home environment and goals for therapy. This information will assist them in developing a personalized treatment plan to fit your needs. The therapist will work with you on exercises to improve your functional independence, evaluate the need for adaptive equipment and train you in the use of any needed device(s).
SPEECH THERAPY

Speech language pathologists (SLP) address cognition, communication and swallowing. During your first visit, the SLP will evaluate your cognitive status, ability to communicate, ability to swallow food of different consistencies (if applicable) and ask about your current home environment and goals for therapy, which will help them create an individualized treatment plan for your needs. The therapist will work with you on exercise programs and worksheets to improve your functional independence, communication and swallowing, evaluate the need for adaptive equipment and train you in the use of any required device(s).

In all cases, our physical, occupational and speech therapists will also provide education and training to your caregiver(s) to ensure that you are able to practice these skills at home.

ADDITIONAL TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE

TGH’s outpatient physical rehabilitation program implements a variety of therapeutic technologies, including:

INTERACTIVE METRONOME THERAPY

The interactive metronome (IM) is a brain-based assessment and treatment program developed to improve the processing abilities that affect motor planning and sequencing. The patient attempts to match the rhythmic beat heard through headphones with repetitive arm or leg movements. IM has been shown to improve:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Motor planning and sequencing
  • Language processing
  • Behavior (aggression and impulsivity)
  • Balance and gait
  • Endurance
  • Strength
  • Motor skills
  • Coordination
  • WALKAIDE

This small device is used for patients with foot drop after an upper motor neuron (UMN) injury. It attaches to the leg, just below the knee, near the head of the fibula. During a gait cycle - the WalkAide stimulates the common peroneal nerve which innervates the tibialis anterior and other muscles that produce dorsiflexion of the ankle.

BIONESS H200

This hand rehabilitation system is a functional electrical stimulation for people who have problems using their hand after a stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury (C5 and C6) or other UMN injury. Benefits of Bioness H200 include neuromuscular re-education, reduction of muscle spasm, maintenance and increase of joint range of motion, increase in local blood circulation and providing hand function.

BIONESS L300

The Bioness L300 is a functional electrical stimulation for patients with foot drop due to a stroke, Brain injury or certain other neurological injuries. It helps improve the speed of walking and also helps patients walk more naturally.

MOTOMED INCLUDING FES

The MOTOmed including FES enables regular movement training for persons with physical limitations. Whether it's passive, motor-assisted or active resistive training, the Motomed training loosens and strengthens the muscles, stimulates the metabolism and the circulation and improves endurance and the function of the cardiovascular functions.
