Faking Good, Faking Bad: Identifying with Confidence
Monday, October 7, 2024
Falsification or profound exaggeration of illness is a well-known trend in a patient and clinic setting. But did you know awareness of our response style and our attempts at impression management may lead to altered responses? The detection of this suspect effort is a major consideration in medical-legal cases involving psychiatry and psychology. This session will de-mystify this concept and will help you understand the different strategies which can be undertaken in detection efforts, depending on the type and purpose of the examination. Our medical experts will discuss an overview of how feigned or exaggerated symptoms are identified in a psychiatric evaluation, with a focus on disability and fitness for duty evaluation. We will also address these issues in cognitive testing. Attendees will get to know examples of contrasting efforts that patients use to appear more impaired versus situations in which an individual may try to appear less impaired, if higher performance is needed. Speakers include an occupational medicine independent medical examiner, a psychiatrist who evaluates public safety workers, and a psychologist who assesses pilots.
