Wheelchair basketball follows the same rules as NCAA basketball with a few modifications, such as for dribbling and contact from the wheelchair. Players are given classifications according to their level of disability, ranging from Class I (least mobility) to III (most mobility). Teams cannot have more than 12 classification points on court at one time.

According to the National Wheelchair Basketball Association: participants in competitive wheelchair basketball must have a permanent lower extremity disability that prevents them from playing stand up basketball.
