Thyroid Disorders Diagnosed and Treated at Tampa General Hospital

Thyroid DisordersThyroid disorders are characterized by any dysfunction of the thyroid, which is the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck where the collarbones meet. The thyroid produces several different hormones, which collectively are referred to as thyroid hormones. This gland influences almost all of the metabolic processes in the body, including your heart rate and metabolism. Therefore, thyroid disorders can cause myriad problems.

Common thyroid disorders include:

  • Thyroid cancer – A disease that begins when abnormal cells begin to grow in the thyroid gland. This is a rare type of cancer and typically has a favorable outcome rate.
  • Thyroid nodules – A lump, which can be either solid or fluid-filled, in the thyroid. The majority of thyroid nodules do not cause any symptoms and do not require any treatment.
  • Goiter – The abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. This condition is common, and if the goiter is small it does not require treatment.

The TGH Parathyroid & Thyroid Institute treats thyroid disorders such as nodules, cancer and goiter.
