What Are the Parathyroid Glands?
The parathyroid glands are a group of four smaller glands (each one is about the size of a grain of rice) located in very close proximity to the thyroid gland. They are not related to the thyroid’s function, but they happen to have a similar name because they are normally adjacent to the thyroid. The parathyroid glands have one purpose: regulate blood calcium levels. If the blood calcium level is too high (called hypercalcemia), it is usually due to parathyroid disease, most commonly caused by a benign parathyroid tumor. Parathyroid disease leads to symptoms and complications throughout the body, including feeling tired, run down, chronic fatigue, low energy, insomnia, memory loss, kidney stones, chronic kidney disease, and osteoporosis. The treatment for hyperparathyroidism is surgical removal of the parathyroid tumor.
