Tampa, FL (Nov. 4, 2025) – Tampa General Hospital and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine are proud to announce that Dr. Robby Wu, the director of the TGH Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy program at Tampa General and an assistant professor of medicine, advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, has been named a 2025 Leader of Impact Tampa Bay nominee by the American Heart Association (AHA). This prestigious recognition honors individuals who are driving meaningful change in their communities to advance cardiovascular health and equity.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), often called “thick heart disease,” is the most common genetically inherited cardiovascular condition, affecting approximately 1 in 500 people worldwide. It is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes and can be profoundly disabling for some patients, occasionally requiring heart transplantation. Despite its prevalence, HCM remains underdiagnosed and underrecognized, impacting individuals and families across all ages, races and backgrounds.
“Early diagnosis and recognition of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can be lifesaving,” Wu said. “Every patient deserves prompt recognition, expert management, early genetic screening, thorough risk assessment and personalized counseling on lifestyle and exercise. I am committed to these patients and their families.”
As part of the TGH Heart Failure Center of Excellence, the multidisciplinary team at Tampa General is committed to providing comprehensive, evidence-based care across all stages of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Because of this commitment to world-class care, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Tampa General as Top 50 in the nation for Heart & Vascular Care for 2025-2026. Additionally, Newsweek ranked TGH as the #1 hospital in Tampa and West Central Florida for Cardiac Care for 2025.
In his Leaders of Impact campaign, Wu is raising $20,000 to increase awareness, education, research and community engagement around HCM in the Tampa Bay area and beyond. Funds raised will support the AHA’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.
