Tampa, FL (June 1, 2015) – For the fourth consecutive year, Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has received national recognition for its extensive environmental initiatives. TGH is the only hospital in Hillsborough County to earn the 2015 Greenhealth Partner for Change Award from the Practice Greenhealth organization, the nation’s leading healthcare community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care. The annual Partner for Change Award recognizes healthcare facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs. Last year the hospital decreased the amount of biohazardous medical waste from the emergency room by 13 percent. Over the last two years biohazardous waste from the operating rooms was also reduced by 21 percent. The hospital also eliminated mercury by switching to mercury-free thermometers and blood pressure machines. The Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards were presented in May at the CleanMed Conference & Exhibition in Portland, OR.
