Citrus County projects 14% population growth by 2030, with up to 7,000 new homes planned across the region. Tampa General Hospital is investing here too, with an expanding network of facilities and a new hospital planned for Citrus Hills.

Education

Families relocating to the Nature Coast will find a strong public school system and a range of specialized academic programs.

The Citrus County School District serves approximately 16,000 students across 22 campuses in communities including Inverness, Crystal River, Lecanto, Beverly Hills, Homosassa and Hernando. The district has been designated an Academically High Performing School District by the state of Florida, one of only 13 in the state to earn that distinction.

Notable programs within the district include:

Crystal River High School, Academy of Health Careers: A hands-on health sciences program developed in partnership with Tampa General Hospital, offering coursework in nursing assistance, emergency medical response, dental aide and biomedical science. Tampa General has invested more than $600,000 over three years to support this academy and the broader Citrus County Education Foundation, providing direct funding, clinical experiences, medical equipment and scholarships.
Lecanto High School, International Baccalaureate World School: Students can earn up to 30 college credit hours through the IB diploma program.
Citrus High School, Academy of Computer Science: A four-year program offering Microsoft certifications and Python programming coursework.
Academy of Environmental Science: A niche public charter school on the Salt River in Crystal River, offering SCUBA certification as part of a hands-on environmental curriculum, one of the few programs of its kind in the United States.

For technical and workforce education, Withlacoochee Technical College has served the community since 1968 and ranks among the top five practical nursing programs in the state of Florida. The college offers dual enrollment for high school students and a full range of workforce development courses in health science, information technology and construction trades.

In Hernando County, the Health Science Academies at Hernando County Schools operate in partnership with Tampa General. More than 150 students have completed clinical rotations and shadowing opportunities at Tampa General Brooksville and Tampa General Spring Hill.

Private school options include Seven Rivers Christian School, a college-preparatory institution serving pre-K through grade 12 in Crystal River, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

For higher education, the College of Central Florida serves students in the broader region with associate, bachelor's and career certificate programs.

Community and Recreation

The Nature Coast earns its name. This region protects more than 98,000 acres of wildlife habitat and is home to the largest concentration of endangered manatees in Florida. The Crystal and Homosassa Rivers flow from warm freshwater springs into the Gulf of Mexico, creating world-class conditions for snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving and wildlife encounters year-round.

Sports Afield named the Homosassa River one of the top 12 fishing spots in North America. The river supports bass, bluegill, catfish, grouper, speckled trout, cobia, redfish and tarpon. The Withlacoochee River and the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes add hundreds more miles of freshwater recreation to the region.

TGH at Home is now available to eligible Citrus County patients through Tampa General's Hospital at Home program. A new Aeromed Regional Transport Program operational base in Brooksville will expand regional air transport capacity.

Most significantly, a new Tampa General hospital location is planned on a 53-acre property adjacent to the TGH Crystal River Emergency Center in Citrus Hills. This full-service facility will include a hospital, a medical office building, a central energy plant and a helipad, bringing the highest level of academic medicine directly to Nature Coast residents.
