Tampa, FL (May 12, 2015) - Tampa General Hospital is the only hospital in Hillsborough County – and one of 10 hospitals in the state – to achieve heart failure accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC). Tampa General has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and undergoing an onsite review by a team of SCPC’s accreditation review specialists. The SCPC is an international not-for-profit organization working to eliminate heart disease as the number-one cause of death worldwide. Its accreditation and certification programs provide the tools, education, and support to achieve measured success in the treatment and management of cardiovascular patients. Heart failure occurs when the heart isn’t pumping enough blood and oxygen to support other organs. The SCPC estimates about 5 million patients in the U.S. have heart failure, which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the nation. In addition, heart failure patients are responsible for 12 to 15 million physician office visits per year and 6.5 million hospital days. The SCPC’S goal is to help facilities manage heart failure patients more efficiently and improve patient outcomes. “We are extremely proud of achieving this recognition. As the leading heart transplant center on the West Coast of Florida, Tampa General has expertise in the management of advanced heart failure,” said Maureen Ogden, vice president of Cardiovascular Services. “Through our partnership with the University of South Florida and community partners, we’ve been able to develop excellent models of care for our heart failure patients.” About the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care The Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) is an international not-for-profit organization that focuses on transforming cardiovascular care by assisting facilities in their effort to create communities of excellence that bring together quality, cost and patient satisfaction. As the only cross-specialty organization, SCPC provides the support needed for individual hospitals and hospital systems to effectively bridge existing gaps in treatment by providing the tools, education and support necessary to successfully navigate the changing face of healthcare.
