Tampa (October 13, 2009) - For the fourth consecutive year, Tampa General Hospital has earned the distinguished Consumer Choice Award from The National Research Corporation (NRC). The award identifies hospitals throughout the country that healthcare consumers perceive have the highest quality and image. Tampa General is the only hospital in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Hernando counties - and one of only 15 hospitals in Florida - to receive this award for 2009-10. Through its Healthcare Market Guide Ticker study, the NRC surveyed over 250,000 households, which represents more than 450,000 consumers in the country. It is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive study of its kind. No other study used to measure hospital performance and preferences contains more consumer responses than the NRC study. Ginny Martin, President of NRC’s Ticker Division, said winners are determined by consumer perceptions based on multiple quality and image ratings. She noted that consumer perception of quality has grown in importance as care options multiply and consumers become more involved in making healthcare decisions for themselves and their families. “These Consumer Choice award winners exemplify the dedication it takes to provide quality healthcare to their communities, and we are pleased to honor them through the eyes of their patients,” Martin said. Ron Hytoff, president and CEO of Tampa General, said consumer perceptions of a hospital are shaped by many different factors both clinical and non-clinical. “Our employees know that job skills are just one aspect of how their performance is measured. How we treat our patients, their families, and each other is just as critical to our success," Hytoff said. "Everyone who works here understands how important this is to our culture.” Tampa General is a 988-bed acute care hospital on the west coast of Florida that serves as the region’s only center for level 1 trauma care, comprehensive burn care and adult solid organ transplants. It is the primary teaching hospital for the University of South Florida College of Medicine. TGH is also one of 13 comprehensive stroke centers in Florida and is a state-certified spinal cord and head injury rehabilitation center.
