LUNG TRANSPLANT

Lung transplantation is reserved for a person who suffers from lung failure, which occurs when the lungs can no longer move oxygen and carbon dioxide efficiently in and out of the cells in the body. Tampa General Hospital’s Advanced Lung Disease & Transplant Center specializes in performing transplants for adult patients who have been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and pulmonary fibrosis, two leading causes of lung failure.

In 2022, TGH’s Lung Transplant Program performed its 750th adult lung transplant - a milestone that few other transplant centers in the country have achieved. The first lung transplant was performed in 2002. Additionally, TGH has performed more than 12,500 organ transplants overall, with shorter wait times and world-class outcomes, and we are ranked in the top 10 in the nation for organ transplant volume.

Both single and double lung transplants are performed at TGH. The program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to transplant care by incorporating physicians with expertise in pulmonology, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and infectious disease who are also involved in multiple TGH transplant programs. Because of this method, TGH’s Lung Transplant Program has survival rates that meet or exceed national survival rate statistics, according to the latest data released from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. TGH operates one of only four active lung transplant programs in Florida. Some notable facts about our program include:

  • Our program’s longest-surviving lung recipient has survived more than 12 years.
  • TGH is one of the leaders in lung transplantation in the Southeast

  • Thanks to our partnership with LifeLink Foundation, Inc., a nationally recognized organ procurement organization, our time to transplant is among the shortest in the nation and in Florida.

Potential lung transplantation candidates are evaluated on an individual basis, based on the information contained in a physician-submitted transplant referral form, as well as other factors.
