Burn Injuries and Rehabilitation
Sustaining a burn injury, however big or small, can have a dramatic affect on an individual’s physical and psychological well-being. Rehabilitation from a burn injury is a lengthy process, which starts on day one and involves a continuum of care through scar maturation and beyond. It involves a dedicated team of professionals and the full participation of the patient. While the path is not always easy, with the right support and therapeutic intervention, burn survivors can successfully reintegrate into their home and community.
The TGH Outpatient Rehabilitation services dedicated team of occupational therapists provides a range of services to assist the burn survivors, which include range of motion (ROM) exercises, stretching, strengthening, scar management, custom pressure garment measurement and fitting to ongoing support through the SOAR support group. The therapists also work with each patient and family on education regarding scar healing and maturation process, skin care, pressure therapy.
During your first visit, the OT will evaluate your strength, ROM, ability to complete ADLs and ask you about your current home environment and goals for therapy. This information will assist them in developing an individualized treatment plan that fits your needs. The therapist will work with you on exercises to improve your ROM and functional independence, evaluate the need for pressure therapy, educate you in the use of the garments. The therapist will also provide education and training to your caregiver to ensure that you are able to practice these skills at home.
