MINIMALLY INVASIVE HIP REPLACEMENT

As someone with a debilitating hip condition, you may have lots of questions about which surgical procedure would most effectively improve your quality of life. Tampa General Hospital hopes to put your mind at ease. Let’s start by considering the different kinds of hip replacement surgeries.

HOW THE DIFFERENT HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY PROCEDURES COMPARE

Minimally invasive hip replacement may be a suitable alternative to traditional hip replacement for some patients. One of the most commonly performed orthopaedic procedures, traditional hip replacement involves the removal of a damaged hip joint followed by the placement of a prosthesis, or an artificial joint, to increase mobility and reduce joint pain. Depending on the extent of your joint damage and other factors, such as your age and health, you may be considered a candidate for minimally invasive hip replacement surgery. While traditional hip replacements can require a 6- to 8-inch incision on the side of the hip, minimally invasive procedures involve specialized instruments and techniques that allow surgeons to replace a hip joint through one or two smaller incisions, disturbing less of the surrounding muscle and tissue. Recovery periods are generally shorter and less painful with a minimally invasive approach.
