Erectile Dysfunction Surgery (Penile Implant)

Erectile dysfunction surgery is an option for men who aren’t able to successfully treat their condition through medication.     Erectile dysfunction—the inability to get and maintain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse—affects close to 30 million men in the United States. It is most often a result of insufficient blood flow to the penis, which can be caused by a variety of conditions. Several prescription medications can increase the blood flow to the penis to improve erectile function, but their effectiveness can vary depending on the root cause of the issue. Additionally, these medications can lose effectiveness over time.  For men who aren’t candidates for other treatments, and for those who suffer from Peyronie’s disease, which causes scarring inside the penis, a penile implant might be a viable option.

What Are the Benefits of Erectile Dysfunction Surgery?

For men who choose a penile prosthesis to combat erectile dysfunction, there are a variety of benefits, including:

  • Concealment – A penile implant is completely encased within the body, so nobody else will know it’s there.
  • Immediacy – Penile implants work quickly, unlike some medications, and an erection can be maintained for as long as needed.
  • Convenience – No complicated technology is involved, and the device can be operated discreetly.
  • Durability – Penile implants can produce outstanding results for 10 years or longer.
  • Recovery time – Penile implant surgery requires minimal recovery time.

Erectile Dysfunction Surgery Details

Two types of penile implants can be used to treat erectile dysfunction:

Semirigid Penile Implants

Semirigid implants remain firm at all times and can be bent outward from the body for sexual activity.

Inflatable Penile Implants

Inflatable penile implants include two inflatable cylinders inserted inside the penis, a fluid-filled reservoir and a pump and release valve inserted inside the scrotum. The pump transfers the fluid from the reservoir into the cylinders, and the release valve allows the fluid to drain back into the reservoir.

What to Expect

Penile implant surgery usually takes approximately 45 minutes. Pain medications will likely be needed for several weeks following the procedure, and most men can resume sexual activity in approximately four to six weeks.

How Effective Is Erectile Dysfunction Surgery?

Approximately 90-95% of men who undergo penile implant surgery are satisfied with their implants, and up to 80% of the devices continue functioning properly after 10 years of use.
