Cordocentesis for Diagnostic Purposes | Tampa General Hospital

What is a Cordocentesis?

Cordocentesis or PUBS (percutaneous umbilical blood sampling) allows fetal blood to be analyzed prenatally for a variety of conditions. These conditions include genetic testing, fetal infections, fetal anemia, isoimmunization, and fetal kidney function in LUTO.

The Cordocentesis procedure

A small needle is guided by ultrasound into the baby’s umbilical blood vessel to retrieve a small amount of fetal blood. It can then be tested accordingly to determine subsequent interventions.
