Dr. Roy Sanders received recognition for his decades of leadership at the 2022 Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s 38th Annual Meeting held in Tampa last October. A past-president of the OTA, Dr. Sanders served as an official co-host for the five-day event and the guest of honor at the event’s annual alumni banquet where 120 orthopedic surgeons and colleagues celebrated his extensive career and significant contribution to orthopedic medicine.

A testament to this contribution is the inaugural Roy Sanders OTA Traveling Fellowship, which concluded in Tampa just days before the OTA Annual Meeting. The Traveling Fellowship is inspired by Dr. Sanders’ impact on the field and designed to be an immersive leadership experience for early to mid-career orthopedic trauma surgeons. Fellows broadened their understanding and improved their networking in orthopedics by traveling to major centers around North America. The three inaugural OTA Traveling Fellows also joined in honoring Dr. Sanders at the alumni banquet.

The OTA Annual Meeting was a major comeback event after the previous two years being online and hybrid due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve had a long history of OTA leadership in Tampa, which is why it was chosen to host,” said Hassan Mir, MD, MBA, co-host, chief financial officer and board member of the association. More than 3,000 attendees from 30 countries all over the world converged at the Tampa Convention Center to share their expertise, experience, and perspectives.
