Lung Transplant Center: Medical Leadership

 

Kapilkumar Patel, MD
Medical Director, Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant

Dr. Kapilkumar Patel operates as the medical director of the Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant at Tampa General Hospital. Dr. Patel specializes in non-surgical pulmonary transplantation and subspecializes in general pulmonary medicine and pleural disease. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine for critical care medicine, internal medicine, and pulmonary disease. Dr. Patel obtained his medical degree from the Medical University of Lublin and received his fellowship in Pulmonary-Critical Care Medicine from Fletcher Allen Health Care. In addition, Dr. Patel is a member of the International Society Heart and Lung Transplant American Thoracic Society. Dr. Patel is known for his positivity, detail orientation, and effective communication with patients. 

 

Gundars Katlaps, MD
Surgical Director, Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant

Dr. Katlaps received his medical degree from the Medical Academy of Latvia, completed general surgery training at Stanford University Medical Center and his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Katlaps completed a second fellowship in Europe at the Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, UK, where he gained extensive knowledge in heart and lung transplantation, ventricular assist devices, complex aortic and mitral valve surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Katlaps then accepted a position at Medical College of Virginia, now VCUHS, serving as the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Director of Programs of Heart and Transplantation and Mechanical Assist Devices at McGuire Richmond VAMC. He has served on boards of several professional organizations, including two terms as the Chairman of the Transplant Surgery Advisory Board at the Department of Veteran Affairs National Surgery Office.
