Weight Loss Surgeries at Tampa General Hospital

There are several different weight loss surgeries performed by the experienced bariatric surgeons with TGH + USF Health Bariatric Center. Our team of specialists works closely with each patient to help determine the most suitable option based on the patient’s individual goals, general health, and quality of life. Our bariatric surgeons can perform:

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass – The stomach is divided and the small intestine rerouted so that food passes through only a small portion of the stomach. It can result in rapid loss of up to 70 percent of excess body weight.
  • Sleeve gastrectomy – A portion of the stomach is removed, including the area that produces the hormones responsible for signaling hunger. It can result in rapid weight loss of up to 60 percent.
  • Adjustable gastric banding – A gastric band is inserted around the upper portion of the stomach where it meets the esophagus. It can be expanded or contracted to control how much food is consumed. This can result in more gradual weight loss up to about 40 percent.
  • Revisional bariatric surgery – This option is used to change previous weight loss surgeries from one type to another, such as converting a gastric bypass to a sleeve gastrectomy, or to reverse a previous surgery, such as removing a gastric band.

In addition to providing these surgical procedures, our comprehensive services include pre- and post-surgery care and support to help our patients enjoy lasting weight loss outcomes. This includes information sessions where these procedures are explained in more depth as well as counseling and support groups to ease the transition into a new lifestyle.
