The kidney transplant program at Tampa General Hospital began in 1974. For many years it has been one of the leading renal transplant programs in the nation. Tampa General Medical Group physicians perform approximately 200 renal transplants per year with excellent results and a waiting time for deceased donor transplantation less than the national average. Outcomes 

As reported by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients in January 2012, our one-year kidney survival of 94% is higher than the expected national outcome. Our one-year patient survival of 97.39% is also higher than the expected national outcome. An important statistic is our median time to deceased donor transplant of 24 months which is less than the national average time of 48 months. Living Donor Transplants

Our living donors have laparoscopic nephrectomies which cause less pain and result in shorter hospitalizations and recuperation time than the traditional open nephrectomy procedure. We offer multiple options to facilitate living donor transplants including a desensitization program and a paired exchange program. In the near future we will begin performing ABO incompatible renal transplants.

Research 

The Tampa General Medical Group renal transplant team is actively engaged in the study of new procedures and therapies. Studies are both investigator initiated as well as larger multi-center trials. Our physicians are members of the clinical faculty of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. We partner with the USF nephrology division in teaching nephrology trainees and transplant fellows.
