Childbirth Education Class Schedule

Expectant & New Parents Newsletter Expecting a baby is a very exciting time in your life! You probably have many questions related to the birth experience and have many decisions to make as you prepare for your baby. Our Childbirth Education classes are designed to help you answer those questions and make some of your decisions easier. Descriptions of each class are below. Registration is available online or by phone at 1-800-822-3627.

Enrollment for most classes is limited to those who will be delivering their baby at Tampa General Hospital, although some classes do not require delivery at TGH. We recommend taking classes around the 28th week of pregnancy.

Classes are held at Tampa General Hospital at one of the following locations:
  • 5th Floor, East Pavilion, Room G521
  • 4th Floor, Bayshore Pavilion, Room K 4008 
  • 2nd Floor, Rehab Center, Room R200
  • 2nd Floor, Rehab Center, Room R201

 


Women's Center Tour

Free 60-minute tour of the Women's Center. The tour is designed for women and their partner. Tour meets at the 4th floor, Bayshore Pavilion Security Desk, and registration is required. Small children may have to leave the tour if disruptive.

Tour is offered in English, Spanish and Portugese

Labor & Birth Preparation eClass

The Labor & Birth Preparation eClass, a unique online learning experience, provides comprehensive information as you prepare for your upcoming birth.  In this class, you’ll learn all about the birth process and medical procedures through instructive video clips, animations, and interactive games. You’ll also get a sense of what labor’s really like as you watch several complete birth stories, and you’ll even have an opportunity to create your own birth plan.  It is recommended that expectant mothers start the eClass around the 28th week of pregnancy.  After registration, you will receive an e-mail invitation to access the eClass within three business days.  Users have access to the eClass for 90 days after first logging in.  This eClass is non-refundable and is only available to those delivering at Tampa General Hospital.

Labor & Birth Preparation - Five-Week Series

This comprehensive five-week series of classes prepares expectant mothers and their partner for all aspects of labor, birth and the postpartum experience. A certified instructor will discuss signs of labor, when to go to the hospital, comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, massage, visualization, analgesic, anesthesia and medical options. It is recommended to be taken near the 28th week of pregnancy if possible. Please bring a yoga mat and pillows. A tour of the Women's Center is offered during week five.

Labor & Birth Preparation-One-Day Mini Session

This abbreviated version of the five-week series offers an overview of all aspects of labor, birth and the postpartum experience. An instructor will discuss signs of labor, when to go to the hospital, comfort measures, and analgesic medication and anesthesia. Women's Center tour not included.

Breastfeeding Basics

This one-session class will provide you with information on the many aspects of breastfeeding your baby and will include a video presentation and demonstration. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for the first 12 months of life. Many new mothers go back to work within a scheduled timeframe, while mothers who are staying home may want to pump and store milk for occasions that may require them to miss a feeding. Information regarding pumping breast milk, proper handling and storage will be included. Our goal is to provide you with the information you need to be informed and empowered. Partners are encouraged to attend.

Back to Work Breastfeeding

This class provides new mothers with information to support breastfeeding and working outside of the home.

Cost: $20 per couple

Basic Newborn Care

New parents need to make many decisions as they care for their newborn. This one-session class will provide the guidance and support needed as parents go through “on-the-job training” during an infant’s first three months of life. Topics covered include infant bathing and dressing, various ways the infant communicates through crying, sleep patterns, signs of illness, when to call a care provider and the needs and adjustments of becoming a family.

Car Seat Safety and Check

This one-session class provides an overview of car seat safety for rear-facing and convertible car seats. Class will teach how to avoid the most common mistakes of car seat usage, provide an explanation of LATCH and how it is used, and review laws about car seat usage in Florida. A car seat check will be offered to those who bring a car seat. This class is taught by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. Please park in front of the Rehabilitation Center.

Ready, Set, Grandparent!

Ready, Set, Grandparent! prepares soon-to-be grandparents for the arrival of their grandchild. The class will focus on what may have changed since they were new parents including prenatal care, preparing for baby, birth practices, baby care and parenting. The class also discusses how to transition from parent to grandparent, how grandparents can help the parents and SIDS prevention. Practice with dolls, including diapering, holding, swaddling and burping will be offered.

Boot Camp For New Dads

Get ready to hit the ground crawling! Boot Camp for New Dads is a workshop for all new and expectant dads. This program is offered through the Fathers Resource and Networking Center (FRANC) and TGH. Veteran Dads bring their one to six-month-old infants to teach new or soon-to-be-dads how to hold, diaper and care for their newborns. The challenges and joys of fatherhood are among the topics discussed during this one-session class for men only.

Cost: $20 (no father is turned away for inability to pay)

Boot Camp For New Moms

Boot Camp for New Moms offers a separate moms-only class. Topics discussed include taking care of yourself as a new mom, how hormones can affect your thinking and actions, adjusting to going back to work or staying at home, breastfeeding realities and challenges, what new dads are going through and how you can bring out the best in your partner. During the last hour of the class, moms will join together with the Boot Camp for New Dads participants and learn how to make it through the first months of parenthood and become confidant, balanced partners.

Cost: $20 (no mother is turned away for inability to pay)

Becoming a Big Brother or a Big Sister

This class is for children ages three to eight. Children are given a brief tour of the Women's Center. Children are asked to bring a doll or stuffed animal from home to use to practice safe holding, diapering and feeding techniques. An age-appropriate story or video about becoming a big brother or sister will be utilized and each child will receive a graduation certificate. Parent must remain with child during this class.

Cost: $15 for the first child, $10 for each additional child

Infant and Child CPR and Safety

Designed for new parents, grandparents or caregivers of an infant or child, this class covers safety and rescue breathing, choking emergencies and CPR. All instructors are certified through the American Heart Association. This class does not provide certification.

Dogs & Storks

Having a baby is a life changing experience for everyone involved, including the family dog. Dogs & Storks is the first national program that offers positive, practical and fun solutions to help families prepare their dog before the new baby arrives. If your dog has never spent time around babies, toddlers or children, don’t wait until your new baby comes home to discover potential problems. *NOTE: Please do not bring your dog to the class.

Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers is a hands-on class for parents who want to learn about their baby's development from one month through the first year. The class will discuss important topics such as the parent-child relationship and how it relates to brain development. This program is offered through Champions for Children Tampa Bay and TGH.

Breastfeeding Support Group and Latch Clinic

It’s normal to have additional questions and want reassurance during the early weeks of breastfeeding. Meet other new moms as you have your latch and positioning evaluated in a small group setting. An international board-certified lactation consultant will facilitate the group and will be available to answer your questions. We can also help you plan and provide support for continued breastfeeding success as you return to work. Join us to share information and resources, make connections with other breastfeeding mothers and find out what is working for them.
