Before Your First Visit

The Tampa General Hospital Transplant Institute is here to help you navigate every step of the liver transplantation process, from your initial evaluation through your recovery. If you’re preparing for your first visit with us, here’s what you’ll need to bring to your appointment:

  • Your driver’s license and insurance information
  • A complete list of any medications or supplements you are currently taking
  • Friends, family members or caregivers (preferably two or more) who can provide support, help you take notes and oversee your at-home care throughout the treatment process

Be sure to dress comfortably and consider bringing reading materials or personal entertainment (like a tablet) for any waiting periods you may experience. You may bring along a snack from home or purchase food at TGH, unless you have been instructed to remain NPO (no food or drink) in preparation for lab testing.

Our team will also need some important information about your medical history. If you are a referring physician or a patient who is self-referring, please view our liver transplant referral form or contact our referral coordinator at (813) 844-8686 if you have any questions.

What to Expect

Your liver transplant evaluation will involve consultations with members of our multidisciplinary health care team, who will work together to determine if liver transplantation is the best option for your specific health situation. The complete evaluation process may take several weeks and will be carefully explained to you at your first appointment.

Exploring the possibility of liver transplantation may feel overwhelming, but you’ll always have a place to turn for guidance and expert advice as a patient at TGH. In fact, you’ll be in close communication with a designated transplant coordinator throughout your care journey. This professional will facilitate your liver transplant evaluation, provide ongoing patient education, coordinate all necessary medical tests and be on-call should you need immediate assistance.
