Following Your Kidney Transplant, Regular Hospital Visits are Necessary
After undergoing a successful kidney transplant at Tampa General Hospital, all post-transplant patients are required to make regular visits to the Tampa General Medical Group’s Transplant & Specialty Services location, which is on the fourth floor of the building at 409 Bayshore Blvd. If you were very ill prior to your transplant procedure, you may be discharged to a local rehabilitation facility for a short time to help you regain your physical strength. Due to the frequency of necessary hospital visits initially required after a kidney transplant (and because the risk of organ rejection is highest during the first few months after transplant surgery), you will need to stay in the Tampa area for six weeks. If necessary, our social workers can help you make lodging arrangements if you reside more than one hour away from TGH, and TGH’s Transplant House could be a viable option.
It is imperative that you have family or friends available to assist you throughout the post-transplant recovery process, including when making your scheduled follow-up visits for necessary exams and labs. You must be accompanied on each clinic visit by a devoted care partner. Additionally, on each visit you must bring your list of medications and vital sign recordings, and be prepared for a wide range of tests that will help ensure your new kidney is functioning as it should.
While the frequency of required hospital visits can vary between kidney transplant patients based on individual needs, a typical follow-up examination schedule can look something like this:
- First three months post-transplant – Visits twice per week
- Four to six months post-transplant – Visits once per week
- Seven to nine months post-transplant – Visits twice per month
- Between 10 and 12 months post-transplant – Visits once per month
Beginning with the one-year mark after receiving a kidney transplant, you will visit the hospital on an annual basis for the rest of your life. During these appointments, a comprehensive series of tests will be conducted to make sure your transplanted organ is functioning properly. You will also need to continue to visit regularly with your general physician and nephrologist.
