Fortunately, there is a wide range of ankle pain treatment options available that don’t involve surgery, though each individual’s treatment plan will depend on the specific cause of their discomfort. Sprains, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, and rheumatoid arthritis are just a few of the conditions that can lead to chronic ankle pain.

Diagnosing and Treating Ankle Pain

To fully understand the source of your ankle pain, it’s important to see a physician who can provide a full diagnosis. He or she will likely want to discuss your medical history, conduct a physical exam, and order an imaging procedure – such as an X-ray or MRI – to pinpoint the source of your symptoms. Then, your physician will most likely suggest that you try a combination of conservative therapies to see if your symptoms can be managed. Options include:

  • Pain and anti-inflammatory medications
  • The application of heat and ice
  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injections
  • Periods of targeted rest

For some individuals, however, conservative ankle pain treatment doesn’t produce the desired results. Others may undergo multiple surgical procedures that, while successful at the time, lead to chronic pain and other symptoms later in life. In these instances, it may be time to consider a total ankle replacement procedure.
