Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation
Spine surgery is a treatment option for individuals with a wide range of traumatic and degenerative spine conditions. When non-surgical treatments such as medications and physical therapy are unable to relieve symptoms, spine surgery may be recommended.
Tampa General Hospital specializes in a wide range of spinal surgery and rehabilitation services that have helped countless patients find relief from their spine problems. Our neurosurgeons have completed seven years of residency and fellowships that focused largely on spine surgery and are considered highly trained experts in the subspecialty. In addition, Tampa General Hospital is ranked among the Top 10 Hospitals in Florida and among the Top 10% in the U.S. for Neurology and Neurosurgery, according to U.S. News & World Report for 2020-2021.
Spine Surgeries We Perform
At TGH, no case is too easy or too complex for us to handle. As part of an academic teaching hospital, our surgeons are continually learning the newest and best techniques for our patients. We routinely treat a high volume of patients with many different spine disorders and conditions using an array of procedures.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Many of the spine surgery procedures that are traditionally performed as open surgeries can be performed with a minimally invasive approach. With the use of technologically advanced robotics and medical instruments, our surgeons can treat complex spinal disorders with minimally invasive:
- Spinal fusions
- Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF)
- Extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF)
- Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF)
- Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF)
- SI joint fusions
- Pelvic fusions
- Complex spinal disorders
- Endoscopic skull-based surgery (to treat pituitary and skull base tumors)
Furthermore, TGH is one of two spine centers with the ability to perform lateral disc replacement and fusion with a patient solely in the prone position, on their belly, without needing to move the patient multiple times as with other lateral approaches.
Minimally invasive surgeries result in less operative time, less anesthesia and less pain and a shorter hospital stay for our patients.
When one or more vertebrae are fractured, minimally invasive percutaneous vertebroplasty procedure fills in the fractures with medical-grade cement to strengthen the bone and help prevent further damage.
When a vertebra has fractured and collapsed, a kyphoplasty procedure restores height and support to the spinal bone by lifting it with a balloon-like device and filling in the space with medical-grade cement.
In cases of spinal stenosis (spinal narrowing), a laminectomy trims or removes some of the vertebrae to widen the spinal canal and relieve any pressure on the spinal cord.
A spinal fusion procedure grafts two vertebrae together to immobilize them in cases where the movement of the vertebrae causes pain.
Spinal Deformity Surgery
In severe spinal deformity cases, complex surgery may be required. These procedures address multiple levels in one region of the spine to correct abnormal curvatures caused by scoliosis, complex neck deformity and flat back deformity.
The spinal experts at TGH commonly evaluate and perform revision surgery for people who have undergone multiple surgeries at other centers but have not found relief.
Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Services
In addition to these spine surgery procedures, Tampa General Hospital provides spinal cord injury rehabilitation services. Our program is designated as a provider of rehabilitation for both adult and pediatric spinal cord injury patients by the Florida Department of Health, Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program. This means our facility has the highest level of expertise and experience to address the medical, rehabilitation, therapeutic and case management needs of patients of all ages who sustain traumatic spinal cord injuries. Additionally, TGH has been named to Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals 2020 list.
