Methods for Heart Disease Diagnosis

Heart Disease DiagnosisHeart disease is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of conditions affecting the heart and vascular system. As a result, the methods used to diagnose heart disease will depend on a patient’s specific condition.

Cardiovascular diagnostic methods include:

  • Blood analysis
  • Tilt table tests
  • Exercise stress testing
  • Holter or Event Monitoring

Additionally, advanced cardiovascular imaging plays an important role in diagnosing all types of heart disease.

Advanced Diagnostic Cardiovascular Imaging Options

Tampa General Hospital’s Heart & Vascular Institute offers a full array of imaging for the diagnosis of heart and vascular disease in children and adults, all in one convenient location at the TGH main campus. Our options include:

  • Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – TGH is one of a few centers in Florida with this advanced technology.
  • Cardiac CT Angiography
  • Echocardiography
  • Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG)
  • Magnetic Resonance Angiogram (MRA)
  • Muga Scan
  • Perfusion Stress Testing
  • Signal-Averaged ECG

Additionally, our echocardiography lab maintains the rigorous level 3 certification and accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) accreditation, which demonstrates the level of patient care we provide.

3D Printing Capabilities

Our 3D printing capabilities have allowed us to diagnose and treat patients with heart disease in a revolutionary way. Printing a 3D replica of a patient’s heart based on cardiovascular images means we can hold the heart in our hands, look at it from the inside out, determine the best access points for heart and vascular surgeries and try different tools and catheters during test run procedures. In some cases, we’ve even discovered previously unknown issues by looking inside a replica heart that traditional diagnostic images missed.

With this 3D printing technology, TGH is reshaping the cardiovascular treatment landscape. We can print other bodily structures as well, including blood vessels, bones, skin and more to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning, and we offer the printing service to other hospitals and laboratories across the country.

Our Multidisciplinary Approach to Cardiovascular Care

At TGH, ensuring our patients have the best outcomes depends on our multidisciplinary approach to care. We don’t just provide a heart disease diagnosis and then recommend a cookie-cutter treatment. Instead, our cardiovascular team of experts—including cardiac and vascular surgeons, structural and invasive cardiologists, transplant specialists, electrocardiologists, interventional radiologists, nurses and many other medical specialists—work together to create an optimal treatment plan for each individual patient based on their unique needs.

Our team diagnoses and treats a high volume of heart disease patients each year, discuss research at national conferences, and publish findings regularly, which speaks to our expertise and dedication to providing our patients with the best outcomes.
