Hemorrhoids is a very common condition, with nearly three out of four adults experiencing hemorrhoids at some point in their lives. The condition can cause a variety of symptoms, which can range from barely noticeable to extremely painful.
Some of the most common hemorrhoids symptoms include:
- Pain or discomfort
- Irritation and itching in or around the anus
- Swelling around the anus
- A painful or sensitive lump near the anus
- Painless bleeding during bowel movements
Symptoms Depend on Hemorrhoid Location
If you have hemorrhoids, the specific symptoms you might experience depends on a number of factors. The most important factor is the location of the hemorrhoids, which can be internal or external:
- Internal hemorrhoids are located inside the rectum and typically do not cause discomfort.
- External hemorrhoids are located under the skin around the anus and can result in irritation, itching and bleeding.
Occasionally, blood pools in an external hemorrhoid, forming a clot. These are called thrombosed hemorrhoids, and they usually cause a hard lump near the anus, which can become inflamed and extremely painful.
