Causes of Endocrine Disorders

There is no specific set of causes of endocrine disorders, as there are many different types of these diseases. The endocrine system, which includes the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries, and testicles, uses hormones to regulate and coordinate a range of functions in the body, including growth, reproduction, and energy level. Generally, an endocrine disorder will arise when there is a problem with the feedback system that maintains certain levels of hormones in the bloodstream. Due to the complex and interconnected nature of this system, there are a range of conditions that can result in endocrine disorders, including:

  • Tumors of one or more endocrine gland
  • A bodily infection that influences hormone levels
  • Damage to an endocrine gland
  • Genetic disorders such as familial isolated hyperparathyroidism (FIHP)
  • Problems with the endocrine feedback system, causing the overproduction or underproduction of certain hormones
