Tampa General Hospital’s Genitourinary Oncology Program Offers Integrated Care for Patients With GU Cancers
Tampa General Hospital’s Genitourinary Oncology Program within the Cancer Institute is designed to treat patients who have been diagnosed with a wide range of genitourinary (GU) cancers, which develop in the male reproductive system and adrenal glands of the GU tract. We are the first genitourinary cancer infusion location within hundreds of miles of the Tampa Bay region, and we encourage integration among specialties and subspecialties to best treat our patients. The high volume of patients that we see every year and the decades of experience that our oncologists have treating even the most complex GU cancer cases has allowed us to practice and perfect our treatment methods, leading to better outcomes for our patients.
TYPES OF GU CANCERS TREATED
Pinpointing the reasons why someone develops genitourinary cancer is not an exact science. Regardless of what causes these cancers, the team of oncologists, urologists, radiologists and other medical professionals at TGH expertly diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Testicular cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Penile cancer
- Urethral cancer
TGH’s Genitourinary Oncology Program can also treat gastro-intestinal (GI) cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer and even rare germ cell cancer at our facility.
VERTICAL INTEGRATION FOR THE BEST CARE
If you’ve been diagnosed with a GU cancer, then we want to create a treatment plan that is best for your condition. That means our oncologists and other medical professionals may recommend that you receive treatment outside the TGH healthcare system.
As part of our vertical integration initiative, we work with Florida Urology Partners, which has 20 locations throughout Florida. While not part of TGH, they help make our program one of the most robust and comprehensive in the state.
TREATING YOUR GU CANCER
No two cancer cases are exactly the same. To that end, the Genitourinary Oncology Program at Tampa General provides care that is highly individualized and integrated. In most cases, if you undergo surgery at TGH, then molecular tests will be completed post-procedure. These tests will help drive the type of treatments being prescribed, such as further surgical, radiation, immunotherapy or chemotherapy treatments. Once the tests are complete, our integrated team will meet to discuss your condition.
A MULTIDISCIPLINARY CANCER TREATMENT TEAM
Our oncologists, radiologists, genetic specialists and other medical professionals work together to create a comprehensive treatment plan specifically tailored to your unique situation, the type of GU cancer that you have and the therapies that will best treat it, no matter the severity of your condition. For example, implementing immunotherapy has made a difference for many of our GU cancer patients, offering low-intensity treatments with a significant impact on patient experience and survival.
It's our commitment to providing world-class care that has earned TGH placement in the Top 8 Hospitals in Florida and among the Top 10% for Cancer care in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report's 2020-2021 rankings.
