Specialized Gastrointestinal Cancer Treatment at Tampa General Hospital
Each patient’s gastrointestinal cancer treatment will depend on a variety of factors, including the type and stage of cancer. The patient’s medical history, overall health, and personal preferences may also be taken into account when assessing the various treatment options.
Gastrointestinal cancer treatment options include:
- Surgery – There are many different types of surgical interventions to remove cancerous tumors and surrounding tissue.
- Chemotherapy – The administration of anti-cancer drugs that are either injected into a vein or taken in pill form.
- Radiation therapy – The use of high-energy rays or particles to kill cancer cells in a particular area of the body.
Often times, the best approach is utilizing at least two of these treatment options.
At Tampa General Hospital, we take a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to gastrointestinal cancer treatment. Each of our patients is continually evaluated by a team of physicians, surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, and other cancer specialists that meets in person bi-weekly to determine the best course of treatment. Our surgeons are some of the most experienced in the area, as we perform more transanal minimally invasive surgeries (TAMIS) to treat rectal cancer than any other hospital in west central Florida.
