Esophageal Cancer Patient Stories

Paul Owen

My prayer for anyone facing this cancer is that they'd have the same outcome I've had: cancer-free. When I got the diagnosis, I didn't know if I'd be living or dying. Now I have a good chance of living many more years to come."

It all began when Paul Owen started having difficulty swallowing. He was soon diagnosed with esophageal cancer and referred to Dr. DuCoin at Tampa General Hospital.

: "While I was in my room for 9 days, there was always somebody with me, or checking in to see if there was something they could do to help. Everybody I talked to, from the very first cancer nurse navigator, was so positive. The team, the students, the staff, the way they treated me was just remarkable. Having that positivity around me helped me recover. It's all about hope.

I want you to listen very carefully because what you have is very serious. If you go to a local hospital, you will die. There's only two places that I'd recommend for you to go."

These were the words Sherry Hall heard from her primary care physician when he discovered a large tumor in her esophagus. One of the places he recommended was Tampa General Hospital.

After chemo and surgery from Dr. DuCoin, Sherry is now happy, healthy, and cancer-free: "My faith and my family played such a big role in helping to keep me positive. I'm so grateful. I can run around with my granddaughter. I just have a whole new outlook on everything. I'm appreciative of all the little things in life."
