Breast Cancer Symptoms
Awareness of common breast cancer symptoms is essential because early detection significantly increases the odds of successful treatment outcomes. For this reason it is important for individuals to routinely perform self-examinations in addition to getting scheduled mammograms as prescribed by their doctors.
There are many possible breast cancer symptoms, the most common being the presence of a new lump, which is typically painless. However, it is important to note that experiencing one, or even multiple, symptoms does not necessarily indicate the presence of cancer. Men or women who discover any of the following symptoms should quickly see their physicians and arrange for further testing:
- Nipple tenderness
- Nipple discharge
- A change in the nipple’s appearance, including dimpling, rash, or retraction
- A lump or thickening area in the breast or in the armpit
- Swelling in the armpit
- Breast pain
- Sudden breast asymmetry
- A flattening or indentation in the breast
