Brain Tumor Treatment Strategies
A patient’s specific brain tumor treatment plan will depend on a variety of factors, such as the tumor’s size, the type of cancer, the patient’s overall health and medical history, and more. In many cases, a treatment plan will include multiple therapies that, together, present the best opportunity for alleviating a patient’s symptoms and improving his or her prognosis. At Tampa General Hospital, we take a comprehensive, team approach to the treatment of brain cancer. Our team consists of surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, and other specialists who develop a complete understanding of each patient’s unique condition and then design the corresponding treatment strategy that is most likely to produce the best possible outcome. Brain tumor treatment at TGH may include:
- Radiation therapy – Using cutting-edge technologies, such as image-guided radiation therapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy, the team of radiation therapists at TGH uses a combination of implants and radioactive beams to eliminate cancerous cells.
- Chemotherapy – Our team of medical oncologists utilize combinations of advanced chemotherapeutic agents that are tailored to each patient’s unique circumstances.
- Surgery – Our surgeons perform a high volume of neurosurgeries and use advanced techniques, such as minimally invasive surgeries and skull base procedures. We also take advantage of the latest technologies, including Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI), which allows our surgeons to view high-resolution images of the brain during and after surgery, thereby reducing surgical complications and improving outcomes.
