Anal Cancer Treatment Options

Anal cancer treatment options are generally effective, giving patients who are diagnosed with this disease a relatively good prognosis compared to other types of cancer. When anal cancer is diagnosed in its early stages, especially before the spread of any tumors, radiation and chemotherapy are typically successfully at eliminating the cancer.

Treatment options for individuals with anal cancer vary depending upon the specifics of the cancer and the patient’s overall health. Factors that may influence treatment include:

  • Current health of patient, including HIV status
  • Stage of cancer (based on size and spread of tumor)
  • Location of tumor
  • Initial or recurrent presence of cancer

Depending upon a patient’s general health, non-surgical treatment methods may be recommended initially, but surgery may be performed on cancers that do not respond to radiation and/or chemotherapy. Tampa General Hospital’s multispecialty team meets every other week to review treatment plans for each cancer patient and our staff prioritizes using minimally invasive techniques in treating any cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, including anal cancer. Utilizing less invasive anal cancer treatment methods improves outcomes for patients.
