A kidney transplant is a procedure in which a patient with end-stage renal failure, also known as kidney failure or renal insufficiency, receives a new kidney from a suitable donor. Transplants are typically reserved for patients with end-stage renal failure, such as acute kidney injury or advanced chronic kidney disease – conditions that prevent the kidneys from adequately filtering waste products from the blood, and in which dialysis will not be an effective long-term solution. In most cases, kidney failure is caused by a separate underlying condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Patients with certain autoimmune diseases and genetic diseases (such as polycystic kidney disease) may also benefit from a kidney transplant.
