The Liver Transplant Recovery Process Includes Regular Clinical Exams

Your liver transplant recovery will encompass much more than the week or two that you’ll spend at Tampa General Hospital before being discharged. The first four to six weeks of recovery are the most crucial because the risk for organ rejection or infection is the highest. For this reason, liver transplant patients are required to stay within an hour’s drive from Tampa General so they can attend vital follow-up visits at Tampa General Medical Group’s Transplant & Specialty Services office at 409 Bayshore Blvd. If you live outside of the area, our social workers can help you locate temporary housing, and Tampa General’s Transplant House might be an option for you. Remember that if you were severely ill before your transplant, you may be discharged to a rehabilitation facility for a short time to regain your strength before returning to your home or temporary lodging. Follow-up appointment schedules vary for every liver transplant patient depending on his or her recovery needs. However, to give you an idea about the frequency of the visits, the following is an example of how often a typical liver transplant patient will return to our clinic:

  • Month 1 – Visits weekly
  • Months 2-3 – Visits twice monthly
  • Months 4-6 – Visits every month
  • Months 7-12 – Visits every two or three months
  • Annual visits from one year after your liver transplant onward

When you attend these scheduled appointments as part of your liver transplant recovery process, you’ll undergo labs and exams that allow our team to track your progress and check for indications of infection or organ rejection. During these examinations, you should bring along a family member or friend who can serve as a devoted care partner. He or she will need to drive you to your appointment and accompany you on every visit. Your care partner should also be prepared to assist you with the challenges of liver transplant recovery, including helping you record your vital statistics daily and maintaining a list of your medications in your transplant log. You’ll need to bring this information with you when you attend follow-up appointments so our health care team can monitor your progress and make any necessary treatment adjustments.
