High Volume of Kidney Transplants Performed Every Year at Tampa General Hospital
Few transplant centers in the region perform as many kidney transplants each year as Tampa General Hospital. Since the inception of TGH’s Kidney Transplant Program in 1974, thousands of living and deceased donor transplant surgeries have been performed at TGH, which serves both adult and pediatric patients in need of a transplant. In fact, TGH is among one of the busiest transplant centers in the region.
While a high volume of kidney transplants are performed each year in TGH’s Kidney Transplant Program, the average time to transplant for patients on the waiting list is historically among the shortest in the nation, per data released by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). This achievement is reflective of the dynamic and successful partnership TGH has with the nationally recognized organ procurement organization, LifeLink Foundation, Inc.
Tampa General Hospital performs kidney transplants for patients who have been diagnosed with various conditions that can lead to kidney failure. All potential kidney transplant candidates must be referred to our hospital by their physician or nephrologist.
Candidates are evaluated on an individual basis (based on the information submitted in a physician-completed kidney transplant referral form and other factors) to see if they meet necessary selection criteria and to determine whether a transplant would be the best treatment at the time.
