Kidney Transplant Candidates Living in Worcester, MA, May Reduce Their Wait Times by Dual Listing

Kidney transplant wait times in Worcester, Massachusetts, and the surrounding area may not be as high as the average national waiting time, but the average wait time for the region can still be prohibitively long for many patients. On average, candidates from the area wait more than four years for a kidney, while the nationwide average is more than six years according to reports from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).

One practice that transplant candidates in this area should consider taking advantage of is multiple listing, or registering on multiple waiting lists at different transplant centers. A patient choosing to dually list may wish to specifically consider hospitals with lower average waiting times, such as Tampa General Hospital. According to SRTR data, the median time to transplant for patients in our kidney transplant program is typically less than half the time candidates face at transplant centers throughout the Massachusetts area.

Although the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network permits multiple listing, not all hospitals accept candidates who are already registered on another waiting list. TGH is one hospital that will gladly accept referrals for multi listed kidney transplant candidates from across the country, including Worcester, MA, but patients should keep the following in mind:

  • Candidates must meet our program’s criteria for acceptance to be placed on our waiting list. Individuals are evaluated based on the information included in a referral form submitted by their physician, as well as a series of subsequent in-person evaluations.
  • Even with double listing, a kidney transplant candidate cannot be guaranteed a reduced wait time, as wait times are dependent on many factors, including body size, tissue type, blood type, and other aspects.
  • As soon as a donor kidney is made available for an out-of-area patient in our program, that patient must immediately make travel arrangements to TGH and be prepared to stay in the area for several weeks for post-transplant monitoring. TGH is able to provide safe, convenient, and comfortable lodging for some kidney transplant patients at our Transplant Houses.

Kidney transplant patients from Worcester, MA, or any other surrounding city are welcome to contact TGH for more information. You can call toll-free at 1-800-505-7769 (press 5, then ask for the referral coordinator), or call the coordinator’s direct line at (813) 844-8686.
