Kidney Transplant Candidates from the Washington, DC, Area Can Consider Dual Listing
Kidney transplant centers in Washington, DC, typically have extremely long wait times. It’s possible for candidates to wait six years or more to be matched with a donor kidney; as a result, many candidates choose to register at more than one center to increase the likelihood of being matched with a kidney. Tampa General Hospital accepts referral forms for patients who are listed at other transplant centers, including those in the Washington, DC, area. We have one of the nation’s busiest kidney transplant programs and provide comprehensive care to many transplant recipients each year. We welcome patients with a wide range of diagnoses, including diabetes mellitus and polycystic kidney disease. Perhaps most importantly, our kidney transplant program often has shorter wait times, especially when compared to the national averages. For more detailed information on national statistics regarding kidney transplant wait times, you can consult the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). Dual listing at TGH does have the potential to help shorten the amount of time a patient spends waiting to be called for a transplant, but it’s also important to remember the following:
- Many different factors, including the number of other local patients waiting for a kidney and the patient’s individual blood type, can influence the length of time it takes for a transplant to be arranged.
- Travel is required, both before and after a transplant. Patients will need to come to TGH for a series of in-person evaluations and be accepted into our program before they are added to our transplant list; they will also need to immediately report to TGH if a donor kidney is available and remain in the area for several weeks after transplant surgery is performed for monitoring.
