Kidney Transplant Candidates from the Baltimore, MD, Area Can Consider Multiple Listing
The average kidney transplant wait times for transplant candidates in Baltimore, Maryland, and throughout the region are some of the longest in the nation. This lengthy wait time can be attributed to a variety of factors, including that the region has more kidney transplant candidates than donors and that multiple transplant programs in the area are served by a single organ procurement organization (OPO). However, double listing (or multiple listing), the practice of joining the kidney transplant wait list at more than one transplant center, is permitted by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and may help reduce the time spent waiting for a donor kidney.
Tampa General Hospital’s Kidney Transplant Program is one of the nation’s top double listing destinations, in part, for its historically shorter than average times to transplant, as purported by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). Additionally, TGH is located in an area that experiences an average of 361 days of sunshine and an average temperature of 73 degrees, making the area an ideal place to recuperate in after kidney transplant surgery.
Should a patient in our program from the Baltimore, MD, area be matched with a donor kidney, immediate travel arrangements to TGH will need to be made, and the patient will need to remain in the area for several weeks post-surgery for regular follow-up appointments. Our two Transplant Houses could be options for out-of-town patients who need lodging.
