Orthopaedic physical therapy is often an essential part of a patient’s treatment and rehabilitation plan. A variety of targeted techniques can be used to help “re-train” the muscles, joints, and tendons after orthopaedic surgery, increasing the patient’s mobility and range of motion while decreasing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Tampa General Hospital’s Joint Center has a gym where necessary physical therapy services are provided to patients who meet inclusion criteria. The amount of rehabilitative care that a patient may require can depend on several factors. On average, patients admitted into TGH’s Rehabilitation Center for post-procedure care typically remain for 15 days before discharge. While the frequency of therapy services are dependent upon a patient’s individual needs, patients are typically scheduled for at least three hours of therapy a day for a minimum of five days a week. Therapy services are available seven days a week. The patient’s orthopaedic care team at TGH will ultimately determine if inclusion criteria for orthopaedic physical therapy services is met. Some of the specific admission criteria include:

  • Must be medically stable and non-ventilator dependent
  • Must need comprehensive inpatient rehab as determined by a physiatrist
  • Must be able to follow commands and actively participate in therapy, and be able to tolerate three hours of therapy per day (or 15 hours per week on a modified therapy schedule)
  • Must be approved by insurance company for admission to inpatient rehab

Led by a board-certified physician, the rehabilitation team at TGH draws on the expertise of physicians, nurses, physical, occupational and recreational therapists, psychologists, and case managers to administer a comprehensive orthopaedic physical therapy program and deliver compassionate care around the clock. Additionally, TGH uses advanced technologies and adaptive techniques to support our patients’ recovery.

Tampa General Hospital’s Rehabilitation Center’s inpatient physical therapy programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). If you have received care for an orthopaedic injury at TGH, speak to members of your care team to see if you meet inclusion criteria for inpatient orthopaedic physical therapy services.
