How to Lose Weight with Bariatric Surgery
Individuals who are looking at options for how to lose weight may find that weight loss surgery is the right choice for them. The Tampa General Hospital + USF Health Bariatric Center offers several types of weight loss surgeries as well as the comprehensive and long-term care needed to help our patients achieve their goals.
Bariatric surgery at TGH is an option for individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 kg/m2 or higher with a qualifying comorbidity and individuals who have a BMI of 40 kg/m2 or higher. There are several weight loss surgery options available at TGH, and our physicians can help patients figure out which option is best for them based on overall health and weight loss goals. The procedures available at TGH include:
- Roux-en-y gastric bypass
- Sleeve gastrectomy
- Adjustable gastric banding
- Revisional surgery
Before surgery, patients are required to attend a bariatric surgery information session in order to learn about the procedures and the lifestyle changes that go along with them. Weight loss surgery requires patients to make lifelong adjustments to the way they eat, including avoiding certain foods, learning to eat slowly, limiting portion size, and taking vitamins and nutritional supplements. Tampa General Hospital’s Bariatric Program offers long-term care, including counseling and support groups, to help patients reach their weight loss goals and enjoy a better quality of life.
The TGH + USF Health Bariatric Center has been named a Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Accreditation under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Since 1998, we have helped more than 5,000 patients reach their weight loss goals. The success of our bariatric program is part of why we have been named one of America's Best Hospitals for Gastroenterology & GI Surgery by U.S. News & World Report.
