Gastric Bypass Surgery and Support from Tampa General Hospital

Gastric bypass surgery, also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery today. Having been around since the 1970s, it is a well-researched procedure that has helped many individuals achieve rapid weight loss and enjoy a better quality of life.

Gastric bypass surgery involves dividing the stomach and rerouting the way the small intestines connect to it. First, the stomach is divided into a large and small compartment, with the small section remaining attached to the esophagus. The small intestine is rerouted to connect to the small section of stomach, bypassing the larger stomach portion. The large section of the stomach is then reconnected further down along the small intestine to provide stomach acid and other digestive hormones. This procedure typically results in a 55-70 percent reduction in excess body weight. It can be completed as an open surgery, but is more typically performed as a laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that uses cameras to guide the procedure and does not require making large incisions.

The TGH + USF Health Bariatric Center offers gastric bypass surgery and other weight loss surgeries from experienced bariatric medical professionals.
