Dual Listed Kidney Transplant Candidates Are Accepted at Tampa General Hospital
Tampa General Hospital accepts kidney transplant candidates who are listed at more than one transplant center, a practice known as multiple or dual listing. Kidney transplant candidates often list at multiple centers in order to improve their chances of finding a suitable donor kidney. While dual listing doesn’t guarantee a shorter waiting time, it does allow a patient to be considered for a greater number of donor kidneys as they become available, so there is a chance the wait time can be reduced. Patients from outside the area who are referred to TGH will undergo an evaluation to determine whether they meet our kidney transplant criteria. Those who are referred to our program via our physician-submitted referral form and meet our qualifications will be added to our wait list.
Our team will remain in contact to ensure everything is ready when a suitable organ becomes available for transplant. There are multiple benefits to being on the kidney transplant wait list at TGH, with our median time to transplant among the most notable. Typically, our wait times are less than the national average, according to reports from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.
Although dual listing can help patients find a match more quickly than they would if they were registered on just one list, a number of separate factors also influence how long patients will wait for a kidney transplant. These include:
- How many kidneys are donated and how many transplant centers are served by the organ procurement organization
- How urgently the patient needs a kidney (determined by the severity of his or her medical diagnosis)
- The patient’s blood type, body size, and other medical factors (patients with rare blood types and highly sensitive immune systems have a higher rate of rejection and typically wait longer to find a match)
